Breast Surgery There are a number of cosmetic breast enhancement procedures that can be performed on patients in order to create more appealing youthful breasts. The type of breast enhancement surgery that is most appropriate for a patient will depend on the type of results they are seeking.
Breast Augmentation
Breast Augmentation is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures today. Breast implants are used during augmentation to increase the size and shape of the breast, thus increasing their fullness and improving your overall proportions.
Some women with breasts that are too small, misshapen, or asymmetrical feel robbed of their confidence and lack satisfaction with their appearance. Breast augmentation surgery can increase breast size, provide a more pleasing breast contour, and correct asymmetry. Women who undergo breast augmentation surgery find that they feel more comfortable and confident in their own skin.
Do you…
• Look in the mirror and lack confidence because you feel that your breasts are flat, too small, or disproportionate to the rest of your figure?
• Feel uncomfortable in certain tops, dresses, and swimsuits because your breasts don’t fill them out properly?
• Feel embarrassed by your breast size when getting intimate with your partner?
Breast Augmentation after Child birth/Nursing or Exercise If you miss the way you looked before you had your children, or after years of exercise, you’re not alone. Many women notice that their breasts get smaller after having children or even from just being very athletic. On the other hand, if you are a woman who tries to stay fit and have noticed that your breasts have become smaller after breast feeding your children or after years of exercise, this procedure may also be the right choice for you.
Breast Lifts
Breast Lifts offer a means to improve breasts that are sagging and appear to have lost volume in the upper pole of the breast. Breast lifts are performed because of breast droopiness, sagginess, loss of elasticity and to improve displeasing breast shape. Breast augmentation patients may obtain better positioning for an implant through a breast lift, while select breast augmentation candidates may be better served through a breast lift alone.
A breast lift is a surgical procedure which is used to raise anatomical breast and nipple placement, as well as firm and tone ptotic skin and tissue. The common medical name for these varied operations is mastopexy. There are a wide variety of procedures available, each indicated for specific breast sizes and issues. It is very important to undergo the most appropriate procedure for your individual needs to optimize post-operative aesthetic results. Dr. Prasad will discuss your needs and desires in his consultation with you so you understand the best procedure for you.
A breast lift can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence, but it won’t necessarily change your looks to match your ideal, or cause other people to treat you differently. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your surgeon.
Breast lift surgery is often combined with breast augmentation Over the years, factors such as pregnancy, nursing, and the force of gravity take their toll on a woman’s breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. Breastlift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts at least, for a time. (No surgery can permanently delay the effects of gravity.) Mastopexy can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. If your breasts are small or have lost volume–for example, after pregnancy–breast implants inserted in conjunction with mastopexy can increase both their firmness and their size. If you’re considering a breast lift, this brochure will give you a basic understanding of the procedure–when it can help, how it’s performed, and what results you can expect. It can’t answer all of your questions, since a lot depends on your individual circumstances. Please be sure to ask Dr. Prasad if there is anything about the procedure you don’t understand.
Breast Reduction
Breast Reduction can relieve the physical and psychological burdens of excessive breast tissue. Men and women choosing breast reduction often suffer from back and neck pain, reduced mobility, and social stigmatization. A surgical breast reduction allows them to participate in active sports, relieves back pain, and creates a flattering profile.
Breast reduction candidates Overly large breasts can cause health and emotional problems. In addition to self-image issues, you may also experience physical pain and discomfort. The weight of excess breast tissue can impair your ability to lead an active life. The emotional discomfort and self-consciousness often associated with having large pendulous breasts can be as important an issue as the physical discomfort and pain.
You may be a candidate for breast reduction surgery if:
• Are physically healthy
• Have realistic expectations
• Don’t smoke
• Are bothered by feeling that your breasts are too large
• Have breasts that limit your physical activity
• Experience back, neck and shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts
• Have shoulder indentations from bra straps
• Have skin irritation beneath the breast crease
When your breast reduction procedure is complete, dressings or bandages will be applied to the incisions. An elastic bandage or support bra may be worn to minimize swelling and support the breasts as they heal.
You will be given specific instructions for breast reduction recovery that may include: How to care for your breasts following breast reduction surgery, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the risk of infection, specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health and when to follow up with your plastic surgeon. Be sure to ask your plastic surgeon specific questions about what you can expect during your individual recovery period.
The results of breast reduction surgery will be long-lasting. Your new breast size should help relieve you from the pain and physical limitations experienced prior to breast reduction.
Gynecomastia
Breast Reduction for Men also known as gynecomastia, breast reduction for men is the surgical correction of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men.
Gynecomastia surgery reduces breast size in men, flattening and enhancing the chest contours. In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). In these cases the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved and excess skin may be reduced.
Plastic surgery to correct gynecomastia is technically called reduction mammaplasty.
What is gynecomastia? Gynecomastia is a condition of overdeveloped or enlarged breasts in men that can occur at any age. The condition can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity, obesity or the use of certain drugs. Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and impair your self-confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition.
Gynecomastia is characterized by:
• Excess localized fat
• Excess glandular tissue development
• Sometimes excess breast skin
• Presence unilaterally (one breast) or bilaterally (both breasts)
Gynecomastia surgery candidates include:
• Men whose condition cannot be corrected through alternative medical treatments
• Healthy individuals who do not have a life-threatening illness or medical conditions that can impair healing
• Nonsmokers and non-drug users
• Men with a positive outlook and specific goals in mind for improving the physical symptoms of gynecomastia
• Men who are physically healthy and of relatively normal weight
• Men who have realistic expectations
• Men whose breast development has stabilized
• Men who are bothered by the feeling that their breasts are too large
Adolescents may benefit from surgery, although secondary procedures may be needed in the future should breast development continue.
Gynecomastia surgery results are immediately visible. Over time, post-surgical swelling will resolve and incision lines will fade. Satisfaction with your new image should continue to grow as you recover from surgery.
The final results of your gynecomastia surgery may take 3-6 months to achieve. Incision lines are permanent, but will continue to fade over time.
